Sound ( Theory )

Sound in a short film or movie includes music, dialogue, sound effects, background music or soundtracks.

There are two types of sound:

  • Diegetic Sound is which characters on screen can hear and can include sound effects, the sound made by movements and spoken dialogue.
  • Non-Diegetic Sound is any sound which does not come directly from the world of the story onscreen.
Sound contains further elements/types ;
  • Dialogue is defined as a conversation between two or more people in a movie , furthermore a film can have a monologue where the actor is speaking out loud if only in a room.
  • Sound effect is any other sound other than music or speech artificially re-produced to create an effect in dramatic presentation.
  • Ambient Noises are background noises that are in a room , a house or any other place.
